You may encounter the error code hda drive_cmd error=0x04 drivestatuserror. There are different ways to solve this problem, so let’s look at them now.

    Problem:

I just enabled disk modifications in cpanel or tried manual disk optimization with hdparm.
I now see these issues in my system logs (/var/log/messages)
    — SNIP – –
Jan 23:28:18 Kernel: hda: drive_cmd: status=0x51 DriveReady SeekComplete Error
    Jan at 23:28:18 18 Kernel: hda: drive_cmd: error= 0x04 DriveStatusError
Jan Sun 23:28 :18 18 kernel: ide: opcode failed: 0xef
    –SNIP–

    Solution:

There are several different drive_cmd states and error codes, but these (status = 0x51, error = 0x04) are already caused by trying to use hdparm to set a hardcoded DMA mode by the ide drive or the interface hardware is not supported.

If this error was caused by configuring cpanel hard drive mods, disable changing hard drive settings in cpanel to prevent penalties from appearing every time you restart your PC.

    hda drive_cmd error=0x04 drivestatuserror

If this is only due to manual use of hdparm, check the computer system’s capabilities with ‘/sbin/hdparm -really /dev/DEVICE’ and set the DMA mode to be supported. See ‘man for hdparm’ for information on using hdparm.

Most modernThe default Linux operating systems provide optimal hard drive and IDE hardware interface performance and do not require any additional “tweaking” or configuration. Misuse of hdparm is already known to lead to unexpected behavior and/or data loss.
